Miniature Hereford cattle have been part of the cattle breeding landscape for many years. They are neither a trend nor a new addition to the cattle industry. As direct descendants of full-size Herefords, they, like their modern counterparts, are required to be registered Herefords with the American Hereford Association.
Herefords date back to the mid 1700s in Herefordshire, England, where they were bred for efficient cattle breeding to convert grass to beef on smaller parcels of land. This breed was highly valued for its efficiency, disposition, and early maturity. The first recorded Herefords, which are now recognized as registered Herefords, were imported to the U.S. in 1817 by Kentucky statesman Henry Clay. Mr. Clay's Herefords were eventually crossed with Shorthorns, resulting in a loss of the Hereford identity of Clay’s herd, which later included miniature Hereford cattle.
It wasn’t until 1840 that the first Hereford importation of record, by William H. Sotham and Erastus Corning, laid the groundwork for a purebred cattle breeding herd. By the late 1870s, registered Herefords began to appear in larger commercial herds as the cattle industry expanded westward. Throughout the 1870s, the Hereford gained a strong foothold in states like Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, and Texas, which were then the largest cattle states with an abundance of free grass, transportation, and central markets. Additionally, the rise of miniature Hereford cattle in later years showcased the breed's versatility and appeal.
From the turn of the century to the 1960s, continued careful cattle breeding of the Hereford resulted in a small, highly efficient beef animal. The 1960s also brought about a change as beef producers sought to produce larger animals to fill dinner plates. As a result, Herefords, including the emerging miniature Hereford cattle, became bigger and longer legged. Ultimately, registered Herefords fell out of favor as the industry shifted toward larger breeds to meet growing demands.
It wasn’t until the 1970s that someone took an interest in cattle breeding to bring Herefords back to their original or normal size. The Largent family of Fort Davis, Texas began with five cows and one bull. By 1981, the first true miniature Hereford cattle bull was born. Today, the tradition of breeding continues, and many miniature Hereford breeders, including ourselves, are honored to carry a part of the Largent stock gene in their own registered Herefords.
